While driving around on Thursday, February 12, 2009, I was flipping through radio stations. I happened to have good timing as the Tirico and Van Pelt Show was headed to a commercial with the tease, “Mitch Albom will weigh in on bloggers”. The three commercials were two full red lights, you know, one of those three minute build a bear deals, and a couple other normal sized ads.
Once break was over Mike Tirico welcomed Mitch Albom, the Detroit writer who made himself famous on a television program called The Sports Writers on ESPN. Albom muttered his way through some irrelevant stuff until asked what he thought of bloggers. Albom replied, and I quote, “I went to Columbia University and earned a masters degree in journalism, I’m not sure what qualifications the bloggers have, but they were not trained in the manner I was. They act like they have the inside information when actually they are just sitting under a big table waiting for the scraps to fall”.
Thanks for that Mitch. Funny how Tuesdays With Morrie falls nowhere near journalism, but rather fiction, a completely different style. Also comical if you watch the video clip, it looks like Albom and his boys are getting paid to do something they definitely should reconsider — singing and playing Billy Joel songs? Wow.
One of your esteemed colleagues really nails the point home Mitch. Remember when Rod Marinelli was coaching the Lions about 4 months ago and was verbally attacked by one of your esteemed chums who told poor Rod that his daughter married the wrong defensive coordinator? Comical it happened in your hometown of Detroit Mitch, that was real professional.
